Guitar Pedal Signal Chain Order: The Definitive Guide

Signal chain order is one of the most debated topics in the guitar world, and for good reason — it fundamentally shapes your tone. After building over 200 custom rigs, here's what we've learned about pedal order and why the "rules" are really just starting points.

The Standard Signal Chain

The conventional wisdom for pedal order goes: Guitar → Tuner → Filters/Wah → Compressor → Overdrive/Distortion → Modulation → Delay → Reverb → Amp. This order works because each category of effect responds best when it receives the right kind of signal. Dirt pedals want a clean, dynamic input. Time-based effects want a fully shaped signal to repeat or wash out.

Where Buffers Fit In

If your pedalboard has more than five pedals or uses cable runs longer than 18 feet total, you need a buffer. A buffer converts your guitar's high-impedance signal to low-impedance, preventing high-frequency loss across long cable runs. Place one at the start of your chain and consider another at the end. Our Buffered Interface and Mini Klein-ulator are designed specifically for this purpose.

The Effects Loop Question

If your amp has an effects loop, use it. Time-based effects (delay, reverb) and modulation generally sound better in the loop — after your amp's preamp distortion rather than before it. Running a lush reverb into a cranked amp's front end turns your reverb tails into distorted mush. In the loop, they stay clean and defined.

Breaking the Rules

Some of the best tones come from "wrong" pedal order. Reverb before distortion creates shoegaze textures. Compression after drive can tame wild harmonics. Wah after distortion gives a more vocal quality. Don't be afraid to experiment — just do it intentionally.
